Do you typically purchase the NFPA70E handbook along with the standard? Or just the standard ? Or just the handbook ? Thanks!

The handbook includes the text of the standard. With 70E it's not terribly helpful. With 70 (NEC) it's almost a must and I always get the handbook version. NEC contains a lot of interwoven requirements and the handbook helps in referring to other sections as well as containing a lot of "this is what we really mean" explanations.

I have found that the 2014 NEC 70 2014 handbook in pdf was constructed with hot links that allow one to "pick & jump" to a sited reference. This is an immensely efficient feature. The 2017 NEC 70 standard text pdf (non handbook) does not have this feature and I have found it to be a boat anchor in comparison to the 2014 handbook. I have confirmed with NFPA sales that both pdf versions of NEC 70 and 70E handbooks have this "pick and jump" reference feature; the standard pdf volumes do not.
