NFPA 70E Article 330 Safety-Related Work Practices: Lasers applies to work practices for maintaining lasers and their associated equipment. Lasers systems are classified by output power and wavelength and are: Class 1: incapable of producing damaging radiation levels during operation. Example: DVD players and laser printers Class 1M: incapable of producing hazardous exposure conditions during normal operation unless the beam is viewed with an optical instrument. Class 2/2M: Emits in the visible portion of the spectrum and eye protection is often from the aversion response – blinking, looking away. Example: laser pointers. Class 3/3R/3B: Hazardous if viewed directly but is considered safe if handled carefully with restricted beam viewing. Example: DVD writers. Class 4: Can burn the skin or cause permanent eye damage as a result of direct, diffuse or indirect beam viewing. Can ignite combustible material. Examples: Industrial, scientific, military and medical use. The question: Which Classes of lasers does your company/clients have? Class 1 Class 1M Class 2/2M Class 3/3R/3B Class 4 Not sure None Select all that apply |
