NOT an arc flash question, but just curious what everyone's thoughts are on wearing voltage-rated gloves and leathers when using insulated tools. Obviously, from a NFPA 70E perspective, voltage-rated gloves are not required if the worker does not cross the Restricted Approach Boundary. OSHA 1910.333 does not clearly require voltage-rated gloves in this scenario, and there is an interpretation letter that specifically states that gloves are NOT required when using insulated tools. Thoughts? Does your company policy require voltage-rated gloves for any approved work using insulated tools? |

Kenneth, As I read the OSHA interpretation (IMO), OSHA didn't necessarily say that gloves weren't required when using insulated tools. I believe it did give the "it depends" answer. I like to keep things simple: if you are working within the restricted boundary and require tools: just wear insulating gloves/leathers and use insulated tools. Mike |

I believe if there is a possibility of an arc-flash the voltage rated gloves and leathers would be required. |

We perform a lot of battery work. We require our workers to wear voltage rated gloves when they can reach 50 volts or more even when using insulated tools. We require arc rated gloves, (not voltage rated), and insulated tools when the voltage is <50 volts, but the circuit is still energized. This happens when assembling a battery. The arc rated gloves provide protection if they accidentally short circuit a cell or multicell jar. Arc rated work gloves are much less expensive then voltage rated gloves and provide better dexterity. |
