I notice rubber mats in front of the mcc's in some companies. 1. should they be labeled with some type of diectric rating ? 2 what other basic equipment should these rooms contain ? Is there a way to use the default tables in 70e when you always have to use the notes and to use the notes you must do some engineering first to see if you are within the parameters of available fault current ? |

Yes, you need to know the available fault current and clearing times to know if the tables can be applied. The Ei's in an MCC can vary widely and can sometimes be well above 40cal/cm2. The biggest factor is if you have a main breaker or not, and what trip functions it has. As for the mats, there are rubber mats with class ratings, same as gloves, that need to be tested annually, but those are not what is normally used in the type of application you are explaining, usually those are just "diamond deck" style mats. I have never been a fan of them because they can give workers a false sense of security, they only offer protection if no other part of the body is grounded (Touching the MCC enclosure for example). Using rubber mats changes nothing as far as safe work practice requirements are concerned. |
