The majority of faults begin as a phase-to-ground event. Systems that use a grounding impedance such as a neutral grounding resister can greatly reduce the ground fault current to a very low value. These currents are typically 5 to 10 amps for high impedance grounding at lower voltages and a few hundred amps with low impedance grounding at higher voltages. Reducing the current to such low levels can prevent a single phase arc flash from escalating into a three phase arc flash.
