The 2018 Edition is adding language regarding the use of rubber insulating gloves WITHOUT leather protectors. 130.7(C)(7) Hand and Arm Protection Three conditions have been added where using rubber insulating gloves without leather protectors is permitted: (1) There shall be no activity performed that risks cutting or damaging the glove (2) The rubber insulating gloves shall be electrically retested before reuse (3) The voltage rating of the rubber insulating gloves shall be reduced by 50 percent for class 00 and by one whole class for classes 0 through 4 This week’s question: Have you/company ever used rubber gloves without leather protectors? Yes No Doesn’t apply – I /we do not perform electrical work Of course comments are encouraged! |

This in alignment with ASTM F496 and OSHA law. Good to have it in NFPA 70E directly even though they also had cited ASTM F496. With the relegation of ASTM standards to non-mandatory, this is good to have clearly stated. |

I use old rubber gloves that were taken out of service for cleaning purposes. They're heavy duty and last a long time for this use. So I answered yes. Oh wait, you meant for electrical protection. In that case even with the exception applied to Class 0, there's really never a reason to do this and I never have. The "cumbersome" factor in wearing rubber gloves is the rubber glove, not the leather protector. I know it's in the standard but I have never found any work condition where it benefited me in any way. Either you need rubber gloves with leather protectors or you don't need either one. |
