A large part of arc flash protection centers on minimizing or eliminating a burn injury from an arc flash. However, as we know, there are my other sources of burn injury.

Fires, steam, arc flash etc.

*This week's question is only about thermal burns and does NOT include chemical burns

The severity of a burn injury is categorized as below.

First-degree burns are considered mild compared to other burns. They result in pain and reddening of the epidermis (outer layer of the skin).

Second-degree burns (partial thickness burns) affect the epidermis and the dermis (lower layer of skin). They cause pain, redness, swelling, and blistering.

Third-degree burns (full thickness burns) go through the dermis and affect deeper tissues. They result in white or blackened, charred skin that may be numb.

This week’s question:

Have you ever had a (thermal not chemical) burn injury and what was the category?
No
Yes - First degree
Yes - Second degree
Yes - Third degree

Stories are always welcome and interesting.

Yes, many first degree burns and a few second degree but all very localized from touching something hot or doing something stupid with fire. No electrical burns unless you count welding and even then it was from slag and minor.

The only burn scar I have was from a drip of solder on my forearm. I was on top of a ladder in an unsafe contorted position sweating copper pipe. All I could do was let it burn. Even then it was minor. I've been lucky when it comes to burn injuries as that's all I have as a permanent remnant.

Yes. Can I count the ways?

Let's see. Ignoring typical slag welding burns, how about when I grabbed a lime slag rake in a lime kiln too close to the rake itself with thick "foundry" gloves on when I heard a sizzling sound, the same kind you hear when you put a piece of meat on the grill. I dropped the rake and kind of flicked the gloves off and doused my hands for a long time in cold running water. Only got first/second degree burns on the fingers but still...

Mind you the rake is not supposed to be "stored" in the kiln and the lime temperature at that location is around 2,000 F...

Electrically some minor burns once in a while. Nothing major so far.

Most interesting one was when I had to repair a cable for a cast iron casting machine and found out just how "FR" an FR shirt & jacket are. Every time a machine finished casting it would drop a little extra molten metal into the knee deep water I was standing in, splattering me. When I took a direct hit, it went right through the jacket and shirt. It didn't propagate a flame but the slag went right through as if it wasn't even there.

Many first degree, few second degree, never for arc flash. The worst was the first time I shaved my head (actually my wife accidentally got too close so off all of it went) Never had to worry about the too much because I had hair. Half of my head swelled, minor blistering and a whole heaping of pain.

A coworker recently had a 3rd Degree burn on his elbow from an MRI machine.
He had a nurse look at it before leaving the hospital and they thought it was a bug bit (he didn’t). A couple of weeks later it was black, very hard and the size of a dime, we beat him on the head and made him go back. The hospital was very skeptical until their burn unit confirmed it.
Week’s later he still has a hard red spot but their debriding healed it over in about 9 days.
