In 2015 a new table defining when arc flash PPE is required was introduced. It is known as Table 130.7(C)(15)(A)(a) Arc Flash Hazard Identification for Alternating Current (ac) and Direct Current (dc) Systems This table uses five questions about equipment condition as part of the criteria to determine if arc rated PPE is required. This includes whether the equipment is properly installed, properly maintained, doors closed and secured, equipment covers on / in place and no evidence of impending failure. The result is a simple Yes/No regarding Arc Rated PPE. This has been discussed a few times at the Arc Flash Forum. However this week's question is simple: Has your company/client changed their Arc Rated PPE practices because of Table 130.7(C)(15)(A)(a)? Yes No Depends on the client |

I voted No as my client is my client because they have had a study done and don't use the tables. Wasn't sure how else to vote |

This is a good question. I have been wondering what the industry is doing. Hopefully we get more votes. I am wondering if many companies have not implemented DC studies just because this is new. Surely there are many bugs needing to be worked out. Resistance to this change is totally understandable considering the tremendous addition of work required to perform these studies (AC is bad enough). I myself have questioned if it is worth the work when many are reporting the outcome to have low levels of incident energy anyway. But the truth is, you really don't know until you do the study. |

These are also referred to as "double ended substations", "secondary selective" or "main-tie-main" substations.???? |
