Some people may work around electrical equipment on a regular basis and need proper PPE whereas others may work in an environment where they are not exposed to electrical hazards i.e. work in an office.

This week's Question of the Week is simple enough.

Does your company or job EVER require that you wear PPE for electrical hazards?
Yes
No - My job does not involve electrical hazards
No - (but they should)

My hardhat is electrically rated and my raingear is FR. As an engineer, I only observe. I usually observe from a distance.

I have 12 cal gear available, because, though I am also an engineer, sometimes I observe from within applicable boundaries.

I have PPE for AF and voltage, as an engineer I am actively involved in data collection up to 34.5kV.

My client requires all employees and contractors to wear PPE when working any where within the facility. They do allow office visits from outside contractors, such as myself, to enter the facility offices without PPE, but I never know when I may be required to go into the plant i\environment, so I always wear the minimum PPE and carry a Nomex coverall with me to increase the IE protection level if necessary. The PPE I normally wear is 8 cal/cm2, and then nomex suit is 12 Cal/cm2. With that combination I shoujld be protected no closer than I get to actual ly working on hot equipment.

I initially worked directly with hot equipment during installation, but several issues, NFPA 2015 not being the least iof them, have caused me to take a hands off approach except when programming protective relays or communications equipment.

Working with many clients I follow just as many rules and protocols for the infrared inspection and other service work I do for them. On the job I always wear FR clothing, hard hat, hearing protection, eye protection and steel toe rubber work shoes. Additional PPE added for specific tasks and clients would include work gloves, face shield-baklava and V-rated gloves.

Base requirement to enter a refinery is some kind of flame resistant coverall.

Though theoretically as an engineer, I am not disturbing exposed energized conductors, in a fashion likely to generate an arc; I do wear AR rated clothing. Arc Flash cause of death would seem awkward in my obituary, as someone who invested major part of my life in Arc Flash Analysis and training.
