Last week's "Question of the Week" was: What has been your experience with non electrical workers such as HVAC techs regarding NFPA 70E/CSA Z462?

Over 80 percent of the responses were that people were either being ignoring these standards or have not heard of them.

As a follow up, here is this week’s question:

What do you think is the reason that non-electrical workers facing electrical hazards do not comply with NFPA 70E/CSA Z462?

Select all that apply
  • Lack of management support
  • Lack of enforcement / fines
  • Lack of awareness
  • Lack of training
  • Lack of time
  • Something else

I think it is mostly a combination of lack of awareness and lack of training. I am not sure whether it would be lack of lack of management support or lackk of management awareness.

Although I would bet a fine would certainly heighten awareness a great deal.

What about lack of a safety oriented culture starting with and supported by Management?

I think that is a good synonym for lack of management awareness

Hi All

I agree that it is not just one cause for this. It is a combination of lack of awareness, training, management support and the creation of a safety culture in-house. The HVAC trade is very much service contractor based. Often these workers are under allot of pressure due to a lack of heat or AC in a building. They, for the most part are working alone on a rooftop, or somewhere outdoors and in extreme temperatures (hot and cold). When I have spoken to some HVAC contractors up here in Canada, I generally get a response that a face shield/ hardhat, gloves and wearing arc rated clothing is one more burden and something else to carry up the ladder onto a rooftop or while at the service call. Recently I had a contractor mention to me that if the PPE was as he described "more user friendly" they may consider purchasing and outfitting their workers
