Last week’s question about cutting the ground prong evolved into a discussion about what was planned as this week’s question regarding “cheater plugs” These are the plugs that “convert” a three prong input into a two prong output.

This week’s question: Have you or anyone you know ever used a “cheater plug”?
  • Yes
  • No

Passed around in the lab at college to prevent short circuiting the reference clip on the o-scope.

I think it would be a good idea to clarify the question as to saying "used a cheater plug incorrectly". I touched on it in last weeks discussion but when used properly (remove outlet cover screw and fasten metal tab) on an outlet which has a metal box and is supplied by grounded conduit I believe they are safe.

As for me, I mainly used them when working for a test lab to perform leakage current measurements where we needed to intentionally lift the ground.
