According to the 2009 edition of NFPA 70E Article 120.1 Process of Achieving an Electrically Safe Work Condition, Step 1 requires checking an up-to-date drawing, diagram or identification tags. IEEE 1584 Section 4.2 also requires up-to-date drawings.

Unfortunately, drawing maintenance seems relegated to those who have little appreciation for what is needed. No consistency, difficult to track drawing numbers, and needed information is always missing,
