When is the last time you or your client tested/calibrated/maintained the overcurrent protective devices? (those that can be tested)

  • Every year
  • Every 2-3 years
  • Every 4-5 years
  • Greater than 5 years
  • Never been done that I know of

I have clients that are all over the spectrum, from every year to don't know when it was tested. I have one client who had a two out of three bus configuration with all three circuit breakers closed and could not tell me how long it had been that way. It was soon corrected and back to its design configuration.

Depends. SOme relays are tested every three years as part of the nerc compliance. Others do not have regular testing.

Relay Testing

If we are talking about consumer substations. NFPA 70b--2010 edition (page 250) recommends a inspection/test frequency of 1-2 years for induction disc relays and 3 years for solid state relays.
Any relays that misoperation may impact the distribution system are dictated by the utility
Any relays that misoperation may affect the power transmission and bulk distribution system are dictated by the local Power Authority.
