This week’s question is a variation on one that I asked a couple of weeks ago.
NFPA 70E Table 130.5(C) Estimate of the Likelihood of Occurrence of an Arc Flash Incident lists operation of a circuit breaker, switch, contactor, or starter as “NO” for likelihood of occurrence of an arc flash for “Normal Equipment Condition.”
Normal condition is defined by 110.4(D) and includes the equipment being properly installed, properly maintained, used in accordance with instructions, doors are closed and secured, covers in place, no evidence of impending failure.
With that intro, here is this week’s question:
Do you wear arc rated PPE when Table 130.5(C) states NO for likelihood of occurrence of an arc flash? Yes No Sometimes – It depends (please comment)

Our company policy is that if we are working around energized equipment, then we always wear AR clothing, even if the AF level is less than 1.2 Cal/cm2.

Our company policy is when interacting with energized equipment, proper PPE for arc flash hazards must be worn. Might be more than needed but trying to teach everybody how to ensure electrical equipment meets the requirements for not needing PPE seemed very onerous. Teach that even wearing arc rated PPE per the label can result in injury.

Jim do you want to comment on the 2021 70E removing the <= 1.2 cal table. That's the comment I was hoping to hear! Thanks Bob! I'm assuming you meant PPE Category 0 which was < 1.2 cal/cm2? The requirements for Category 0 were already inherent in NFPA 70E i.e. eye protection, natural fiber etc. so it was removed in 2015. - let me know if I misunderstood the question.
