| Post subject: | Simple network software for graphical switching operations? |
Thread subject is probably not the best but here goes. I'm looking for a simple way to model a medium voltage distribution system that has several circuits, the ability to loop, close transition tie, etc. that will graphically display switch operations using a touch screen monitor so a user can simulate the consequence of a planned operation. I can sort of do this with SKM by putting switches in or out of service but that only changes from whatever I colored that circuit to in the oneline while "in service" to the out-of-service color I chose to start with when I take the switch out of service. It does not automatically change the circuit color if switching operations move one segment from say circuit 1 to circuit 2. e.g. Feeder 1 is blue on the screen and Feeder 2 is red. I close 1 into 2 and then take 1 out of service and I want every part of 1 to now automatically turn red to indicate all that load is now on Feeder 2. I did speak to SKM about it briefly but they just confirmed what I already knew I could do and what the limitations are in their software. Does that make sense? Is there a very simple software package I can export an existing network one-line from SKM or AutoCAD into and use as described above? Surely the utility guys use something like this on a daily basis. Thanks. edit: An oh,if there are two feeders closed together it will indicate that too, somehow or another. |

I never did come up with a solution. RE: MatLab, I'm too old to have been required to use that. I think it existed when I was in college in the late 80s, early 90s, but I have never used it. Thanks for thinking of me though. |

According to Wikipedia it was released in 1984. My wife says she had to use it in one of her CEE classes at Purdue and there were no graphics. She also used it at her first job out of school at Delco Electronics. I did not have the pleasure. |

I still have my HP 28S but the battery cover and corner is broken. I replaced it with an HP 48S which I still have, and use. |

Yea weird...I just noticed the original post date. I'm not sure how I came across it... Now, MatLab is much more WYSIWYG, re. the SimuLink capability. Mike |

What you’re describing is essentially dynamic one-line visualization with real-time switching simulation, which most basic tools don’t handle automatically. Utilities often use advanced distribution management systems (DMS) or specialized SCADA simulation software that can dynamically update feeder colors and load assignments based on switch operations. Some options to explore might include CYME DMS, ETAP’s Distribution module, or OpenDSS combined with a custom GUI—these can import existing one-lines and allow interactive simulation with automatic updates of circuit status. It might take a bit of setup, but that’s usually how utilities handle it. |

You’ll likely need either a GIS tool like ArcGIS Utility Network or a custom solution that models your network as a graph and updates feeder paths after each switch operation. |
