I have a large 208 volt switchboard with 800 amp frame and lower rated trip units insulated case CB feeding remote panels. Each of the CB has ARMS Arc Reduction Maintenance Switch. The Arc Flash Study shows some of the remote panels with a high arc flash energy level but many remote panels with a relatively low level of arc flash energy. I don't want to make the project an engineering exercise by enabling every ARMS to reduce an already low level of arc flash at a remote panel. I would like to only use the ARMS to reduce the higher level of arc flash at the remote panels. But it seems that it may be cumbersome and confusion to have some ARMS labeled as enabled and the others not in use. I am looking for some thoughts on this issue. thanks Jimmy |

Label them all for the base scenario with ARMS switches off. Run a scenario for all ARMS switches on. Publish ARMS on scenario results in your report and discuss with the client / facilities manager. Have them put an IE with ARMS engaged fill in the blank field on their Energized Work Permit form. They have to refer to the report to get that value and make a conscious effort to consider and adhere to that option. Safer than two labels or other labels and relying on someone to understand the labels and conditions to be met for the label. |

I agree with bbaumer. Label off normal operating conditions. Choosing to recognize a hazard that requires unique parameters such as activating ARMS should be a conscious decision and done using an approved Safe Work Practice (SWP) form or similar document. An approved document needs to direct a qualified person to activating ARMS on the appropriate device and then understanding the downstream impact. It also needs to direct them to disabling ARMS once work is complete. |
