IEEE 1584 continues to gain widespread acceptance globally. Initially used by predominantly U.S. based companies with operations in other countries, it continues to gain traction and acceptance globally. IEEE is an international organization, albeit dominated by United States members. Ideally IEEE standards will become international standards. |

The attitude in Europe about arc flash where it is recognized is to go to arc resistant gear. That's great for an operator but terrible for the most vulnerable workers, the electricians that have to go through a heavy door and are still exposed. It creates more work and addresses the tasks that formerly had the least risk (operating equipment). I agree about US dominance in IEEE 1584 but we follow IEC standards for meter safety, and especially the latest edition of NEC is going towards adopting a hybrid of both European standards and American ones for hazardous locations, an area where Europe in many ways is ahead. In designing safety systems, many times ISO or IEC standards are used, and to my knowledge only TuV is certifying SIL ratings. |
