Hello, thanks in advance for your help! We are trying to follow NFPA 70E rules for all electrical activities. Our goal is to never use an electrical work permit and always de-energize. We are in the process of IR testing all of our electrical panelboards. We are confused on what is required to remove the covers and do the testing. All the panelboards have an arc rating of 4 Cal/m3 or less. All panels are 208V 3-phase, 120V to neutral-gnd. What is the safe way to remove the covers (Main and dead front covers) and complete the IR Testing? IR windows are not really an option on these types of panelboards since there is no location to install so that you can see all the connections. Thanks! |

If you have compliant Electrical Safety Program and the employer completes a qualitative risk assessment for work tasks in 70E Table 130.5(C) and rationalizes the work tasks, separating opening hinged door from removing bolt on cover and also adds Normal and Abnormal to hinged doors, you do not need arc flash PPE to open the hinged door energized. You establish an electric shock hazard while opening the door, but the door will push you back outside 12 inches the Restricted Approach Boundary. Then the Qualified Person also with no arc flash & shock PPE takes the digital picture and IR scan, or completes a visual inspection etc. Then close the hinged door. Job done. |
