Silk Screening on Coveralls

Hello Guys

I believe I know the answer to this but I was looking for a second or third opinion.

I have a customer asking what are the implications of silk screening a logo on the back of a coverall as to the NFPA 70E or NFPA 2112. The silk screening will not be FR and would probably melt.

Of course it is on the out side of the garment and may or may not melt through.

On the back it might not be as bad, but you still should not allow any non FR item on the outside.

There are ANSI standards that deal directly with this question. Unfortunately I don't know the exact standard off-hand but the standard basically says that when it comes to Arc Flash and FR garments the user is permitted to have a very small percentage of the garment embroidered with non-FR material, which silk screening would be covered under. This is more so for when workers choose to have their names embroidered in non-FR thread, etc. It sounds to me like this logo they wish to silk screen on the back fo the coverall will be quite large and out of compliance with the standard.

ASTM F 1506 is the standard covering this.

The heraldry must not pose a greater risk than if it wasn't there. If unsure, have it tested, or don't use it.

That's for NFPA 70E, I don't know enough about NFPA 2112 to answer that portion.

I guess as long as we let the customer know what they are getting into when we advise.
Seeing as the standards can be applied on each specific case as as to whether the non FR additives contributed to the injury it is a decision they will have to make.
