Electrical Safety Council Issues Safety Advice Following Eastenders Electrical Fire

The Electrical Safety Council (ESC) is drawing attention to a current Eastenders plot line, to remind the public of the potential dangers of using an unqualified electrician. Around nine million people tuned in to watch Eastenders character Ronnie Mitchell use an unqualified electrician to carry out essential electrical work in her nightclub – a move which led to a major electrical fire. Recent research by the ESC indicates that one in three people (32%) admit they are more likely to put off or postpone having electrical work done - or attempt to do the work themselves - in the current financial climate. Phil Buckle, Director General at the Electrical Safety Council explains: “Last week’s fire on Eastenders highlighted the need to respect the power of electricity and the importance of using a registered electrician. This is why it’s so important that the ESC campaigns to improve public knowledge of electrical safety, including information about understanding and complying with Part P. We are glad an issue like this was raised on Eastenders, as it has brought an often ignored subject of electrical safety to the forefront of public interest.”
