Shock Hazard Analysis

    In doing an arc flash analysis, is it necessary to complete a shock hazard analysis and define the different approach boundaries (other than the flash protection boundary)

    Yes, I provide both for my projects. PTW32 from SKM generator boundaries for Arc flash and shock hazard when you select the template 14 or 18 in custom labels

    It's not so much that the shock hazard is part of the arc flash study but NFPA 70E requires both a Shock and Flash hazard assesment before live work is done so most people (everyone??) ties them both together and put both on the labels for completeness.

    Is the shock hazard information generally taken from the NFPA 70E tables, or calculated with software? I have been using easypower and I see nothing about the shock boundaries in the software.

    I believe all the programs have a data base that contains the approach boundary info from NFPA 70E. The labels should reflect what is found in 70E for Limited, Restricted and Prohibited approach limits.

    In EasyPower, when the label are printed both the Flash Hazard and Shock Hazard information is on the label.

    For example:

    1'-9" Flash hazard boundary
    1.9 cal/cm2 flash hazard at 18 inches
    #0 PPE level

    0.48 kV shock hazard when cover is removed
    3'-6" limited approach
    1'-0" Restricted approach - Class 00 voltage gloves
    0'-1" Prohibited approach - Class 00 voltage gloves
