What I have found when comparing our arc flash labels to the tables of 130.7(C)(9) is that in the high energy portion of our facility the tables cannot be applied because either the available fault current is too high or the clearing time is too slow. And in the low power areas the tables increases my PPE way above what my labels call for. Something i have been focusing on is the "Arc Flash Boundary". many of our hazard risk catagory 0 panels and equipment have less than a 1 foot boundary. Some have a 0.3 foot boundary. My PPE is catagory 0 required inside the arc flash boundary. Sometimes a pair of welding gloves and a long sleeve cotton shirt when turning on and off breakers in the low power panels or disconnects. We always wear our safety glasses but paying attention to the boundary gives me a good indication of the hazard. I have also become a fan of a wooden broom handle. I can add 3 feet to my distance away from the hazard when operating small breakers, etc. and typically this puts me outside of the boundary on our catagory 0 stuff.
