Does a employee have to be a 'QE' and in ppe to start up a generator online or off line? We test the gen with no load most of the time, sometimes with a load.
Our plant has a 480v 4000a electrical service and the gen is about 1750kw, i believe. Thanks for the responses

Is there an electrician (or QE) when the power goes out and the generator starts? What type of transfer exists? Fault currents/voltages?

Typically most generators connections, transfer switches, buss bars, and the like all are in cabinets.. Unless you start your generator by taking all the doors off the gear, I would say no... Most "start" switches are usually on the front of the Generator Control Panel... This would be the same as turning on/off a light switch... Does your company ask an electrician to be present in the Electrical Rooms, when motors start in the MCCs?

You should have basic training on the engine, check oil, water, battery, etc - but you don't need to be a Qualified Person to just start and run.
